Nearly half of U.S. adults experience dry eye signs and symptoms

The leading cause of dry eyes is a common eye condition called Meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD). This occurs when the glands are not secreting enough oils or the oils are poor quality.

What are Meibomian Glands?

The meibomian glands are located along the base of the eyelashes and secrete the lipid layer of the tear film. There are about 50 glands on the upper eyelid and 25 glands on the lower eyelid.

How our eyes keep moist

Every time we blink, a tear film coats the surface of the eye making it smooth and clear. The tear film is comprised of 3 layers: oily, watery, and mucus — working together to keep our eyes moist and lubricated.

Tear film explained

The meibomian glands secrete oils which stabilizes the the outermost and thinnest layer of the tear film. This oily layer sits above the watery and mucus layers to prevent the tear film from evaporating too quickly and lubricates the eyelid movement.

What causes Meibomian Gland Dysfunction?

If the meibomian glands are blocked or clogged, less oil reaches the surface of the eye. As a result, the watery layer underneath evaporates faster causing eye dryness and irritation.

How to unclog Meibomian Glands?

The most common doctor recommended treatment is to apply a warm compress to the eyelids. The heat liquifies solidified oils, unclogs the glands, and facilitates the secretions. As a result, the lipid layer of the tear film is stabilized preventing further evaporation.

Warm compresses are clinically proven to improve dry eyes, according to the Tear Film & Ocular Surface Society.

However, most patients do not comply with this treatment due to the difficulty required to maintain a consistent temperature for an extended period of time.

Fast and easy at-home relief

Eystro’s electric heated eye mask was developed to improve the management of MGD.

It works by applying controlled and uniform heat to warm the eyelids to 107.6°F which is 44°F above the melting temperature for meibum and safely below the 113°F safety threshold for corneal temperature.
